A Poem For Walkers

WALKING FOR HEALTH

(Market Weighton)

On a Wednesday morning

the walkers all set out;

cold and frosty mornings

are what it's all about.

We speed up the hill to Goodmanham

then stop to catch our breath.

To have done the same thing last year

would have scared us all to death.

Now we have a monthly walk

at places near and far.

It's easier to organise

when we can share a car.

At eleven we're in the chapel

for coffee, tea and toast,

but the company and chatter

is what we like the most.

We've had our lovely Christmas lunch

at the old Bay Horse

and enjoyed each othersʼ company

and lots of food, of course.

Great group of local people,

we all get on just fine.

I'm glad to be a leader

and proud this group is mine.

Market Weighton's First Walk For Health Walk

The pictures below were taken on Wednesday 14th January 2009 when 37 walkers took part in the first health walk  on a crisp, bright sunny morning. The walkers enjoyed the beautiful East Yorkshire Wolds scenery between Market Weighton and Goodmanham.

Walkers pose for a picture outside the Methodist Church before setting out on the very first weekly walk. Lead by Nigel Botting the first weekly walk gets under way.
Walkers getting into their stride. Walking the Way to Health officials from East Riding of Yorkshire Council bring up the rear.
The cold weather is soon forgotten as walkers enjoy the winter sunshine. The walking is easy along the trackbed of the old York to Hull railway .
Time for a natter and for making new friends. Taking a break to view the Market Weighton anticline, well known to geologists the world over.
Time to get under way again and leave Rifle Butts Quarry Nature Reserve. Rob Lundie stops to answer a walker's query.
Ready to tackle the short climb upto Goodmanham. Nearly at Goodmanham now!
The group stops at All Saints church in Goodmanham. Rob Lundie tells the group aout the history of the Pagans conversion to Christianity in ancient times at this place.
Walkers take the road back to Market Weighton. Nearly at the end of the walk now as Nigel Botting directs the back markers along the final stretch.
